5 Caribbean & Latin Inspired Fitness Classes

January 2, 2017 by Mikelah 1 Comment

New year, new you, right? We all make fitness and health related goals…ALL of us! Some we keep and some go out of the window in the first few weeks. It’s hard to keep consistent and motivated, especially if you hate working out. I’ve been working out somewhat consistently for the last few years. I’ve learned what my body needs to see results and how to keep myself motivated. I just need to be even more consistent.

I love the feeling after working out, but get bored doing the same thing. Share on X

Food is definitely my weakness, which is why I joined Weight Watchers (more on that later), but I also need variety in my workouts. I love the feeling after working out, but often get bored doing too much of the same thing. I’m finally going to CONSISTENTLY share more on the blog to keep me accountable. I don’t have a fitness accountability partners, so my blog family will be it!

I joined Bahamianista’s #FitandLit2017 challenge (sign up if you’re interested), but I’m also doing T25 for the next 10 weeks. Both are suitable for me, because I can get an early morning workout within 30-40 minutes, no excuses. I know how much I hate leaving the house when it’s cold outside.

I’m also big on taking an occasional fitness class. I love a great class where the music and energy is great and I’m having fun! I’m always looking for classes that infuse Caribbean dance moves and music. Here are a few that can check out as well.

Zumba

Zumba seems to be the classic cornerstone of fun fitness. Infusing fitness moves from various Latino, Afro and Caribbean dance and music. Zumba has a wide reach, you can pretty much find a teacher or class anywhere or buy a DVD. I even bought the Wii video game, but it wasn’t the same energy as a class, my daughter enjoyed the video game though.

Brukwine

Brukwine is a the sexy dancehall inspired class for women. It’s sensual, fun and a great workout, especially for your core and legs. Creators Tavia and Tamara infuses their professional dance background into a fitness class for self proclaimed dancehall queens like myself. Classes are primarily offered in New York City, but there are master class tours available as a well.

Socacize

Dancing to Soca for an extended period of time is definitely not for the faint hearted! So a class where you’re pelting your waistline non stop will definitely burn some calories. Based in Toronto, Canada instructors are also available in Brooklyn, New York,  Joppatowne, Maryland and St. Lucia.

Fiyah Fit

I was introduced to the Afro/Reggae/Dancehall fitness class created by Jessica Phoenix when she did her presentation at a caribBEING lime during Caribbean American Heritage Month. Her high energy was infectious as she gave the crowd a sample of what to expect if they took a class. Classes are primarily based in New York City and Chicago.

Soka Tribe

The community that Soka Tribe has created is amazing. Supportive, fun and fitness is inspiring.  Founded by Shermica “Sokanista” Farquhar , Soka Tribe is a cardio dance fitness workout class that brings carnival vibes to a gym. Based in Washington, D.C. the Sokanista also tours the U.S. with classes in New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and more.

Sign up for their newsletters so you can keep in the know about when these classes will be in cities near you. Either way get active and keep consistent.

Are there more Caribbean and Latin dance/fitness classes on rise? Drop me a comment below so I can check it out!
