What’s better than a bad-ass bassist? A female bassist and singer with style! Joyah is one-third of the reggae band British Dependency. Hailing from the island of Anguilla, she holds her own as the only girl in the group with style and vibes on stage and off. Get to know more about Joyah’s style inspired by her Caribbean roots.

How would you describe your personal style?  I dress how I feel. So what ever I feel like will be the showcasing of my style.

Does being Caribbean inspire your style?  Yes! It does.  Growing up in the Caribbean on a small island you’re really exposed to nature and nature carries many colors, shapes and textures and I’ve became one with that. So having that oneness, comfortably I’ll infuse different textures, patterns, cuts and colors in my outfits. I also feel that colors and I have a great relationship and that came from the variations of the Caribbean.

What makes Caribbean style different?  Caribbean style is different through the privileges and luxuries of living in the tropics and having that great temperature climate all year round.  It gives us a different freedom in our dressing and a pizzazz like no other.

As a musician, how do you incorporate your feminine style while on stage (does off stage differ)?  Now that’s the Dynamic side of my style, on stage and being a female musician makes it so much fun. My style on stage is my personal style but multiply by a hundred and I call her NyceNess. There ain’t no telling what her next look will be like because she is the height of my energy.  So there is a difference on stage and off but they both reflect Joyah.

Who are your personal style inspirations?  Apart from my internal stylist, I would say my Grandmother. She has great influence on my style. This woman has a flare to her and as a child I saw her express it through her selective wardrobe.

Name a few of your favorite designers and stores to shop ? My favorite designer is Charla Hobson from House of Panache in Anguilla. I also admire Christian Boucaud designs from Trinidad.  Some of my favorite stores are Irie Life In Anguilla, H&M and Amazon. Amazon is the trifecta, they have everything on that site so with my style the site makes it convenient to shop.

What is your must have fashion item in your closet?  A black high waist spandex shorts.

What one trend for you that will never die?  Leggings.

What’s one trend you would never wear and why?  Interesting! Since I know that you are the main projector of what it should look like when you wear it, I’ll say the hammer pants because I don’t feel that look will compliment the proportions of my body. No!
