Mink Jo is First Lady of the Brand New Machine (BNM) Label bringing an authentically fun island-pop sound to a new age of virtual music. In Jo’s release Boy+Girl+Love, which features “No Friend Zone”, you will get to know more about this rising singer/songwriter out of Kingston, Jamaica.

In her interview with Style & Vibes, Mink Jo shows that she is ready to take her talents to the world!

Style and Vibes: You were born in 1996 in Kingston, Jamaica. What were some of your style influences growing up in the new millennium?

Mink Jo: Beyoncé is definitely one of my style influences mixed with ‘Lil Kim.’

S&V: How do you manage to keep up with the changes of style every season?

MJ: I’ve been frequently in and out of shoots this year so the stylists have been keeping me in touch with the trends as well as other bloggers on my Instagram. In Jamaica we go all out with we style.

S&V: What are some of your favorite aspects of growing up in the islands and how has being Caribbean impacted your choice in clothing?

MJ: I love that I can go to the beach almost every Sunday, and it never gets old. Most of my friends are like 5 minutes away from me, so hanging out is never really an issue. Being Caribbean, our choice of style can be a bit laid back however we’re not afraid to take risks and try new things.

S&V: Who in the fashion industry, locally or internationally, would you like to partner with to release a new collection?

MJ: Locally I would want to collaborate with a more urban brand, like a Slang Teez or this new underground brand named ‘Vulgar’ made by my two friends which will be coming out again soon. Internationally I’ve been in talks with this new watch company Kyboe based in Miami (definitely wanna collaborate with them) and Hood by Air. Their SS16 NYFW show was amazing! I like to keep my style very urban.

S&V: I love your style and how you change your hair so often. What new hairstyle trends are you really feeling? Which hair-do would you pass on?

MJ: I’m more into color these days. Hairstyle trends – I can never go wrong with a Bob or some braids/twists. Who knows I might go natural soon too. Nobody knows when it comes on to me and my hair, I’m very spontaneous with it.mink-jo-dancehall

S&V: Name three signature items you can’t go without to create the perfect look. It could be your favorite lipstick, handbag, or a pair of bright platforms – whatever best fits your style.

MJ: 1) Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara. 2) Nude Lippie. 3) To add to my outfit I’d pair it up with a nude pair of Steve Madden stilettos or throw on some pumas.

S&V: In the video for ‘No Friend Zone’ you are seen showing off your dance moves. How important is working out and eating right to having a bomb physique?

MJ: Staying fit and having a bomb physique; which by the way has to be the body you love, and not what society says/thinks is very important. Especially for your own self esteem. Criticism comes from everywhere in this industry and having a good self esteem makes life much easier….plus we don’t see the haters anyway (Laughs).
