The Caribbean Fashion industry is growing and I’m excited for all the potential for young Caribbean designers to truly make their mark on an international scale in the fashion industry. Quite often Caribbeans (in the islands and abroad) are excited to wear popular “name brand” designers, but there are extremely talented designers in the Caribbean, unique to our island aesthetic, with just as much creative talent. Why wear a few of our own?
As a Caribbean fashion enthusiast, I was excited to see Haute Caribe, a mini documentary on Trinidad & Tobago fashion industry. The documentary features well known designers like Meiling, Anya Ayoung-Chee, Claudia Pegus and more discussing carnival costumes and its relation to fashion, how the industry moved from dress makers to designers and the future of Trinidad & Tobago Fashion.
