Reggae singe I-Octane was recently in town and performed a few songs off his self released EP entitled Straight From the Heart at DROM in New York City. The EP features six new and original songs and is now available through iTunes and Amazon.

The invite only event was filled with media personnel and fans alike. Actor Leon, reggae artists Gyptian, Fambo, Hyah Slice, Lisa Hype and Martina were in the building to show support as well.  I-Octane opened with fan favorites “No Love Inna Dem,” “My Life,” “Lose A Friend,” “Mama You Alone,” “No More Black,” “Low Mi,” “Jah Jah Love Me (Accapella)” and “One Ting Mi Know Say.” The high energy set followed with singles from the EP such as “Burn Dem Bridge,” “Example For the Poor,” “My Problems Gone” and “Falling”.

“It was a great pleasure to come back to New York and perform in front of the radio personnel, media houses and DJs who support and help build my career. Most of all to perform with Derrick Barnett and Statement band for the first time was a great experience.” (I-Octane)

Lenny Kravitz is gearing up for a new album Black and White in America. He enlisted the help of rapper Jay-Z on a song call “Boongie Drop”. The title is a little crazy, but the song has a nice infusion of Dancehall and Hip-Hop.

I have to be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of Jason Derulo, but “Don’t Want To Come Home” caught my ear and the video, which featured Pussycat Doll, Melody Thorton, was even better! It’s the first single off his sophomore album Future History, slated to release this September. The first single is a combined sample of 90’s Dance song “Show Me Love” by Robin S and Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O”. The Haitian-American singer tapped Tika Sumpter for his next single “It Girl”, which is fitting since Tika Sumpter has been everywhere recently looking fab. Female Dancehall DJ Spice is back with a new single on the Wash Belly Riddim featuring Hip-Hop femcee Missy Elliott called “Fun”. Spice already shot a video for the upbeat single, but I have to say it was a little distracting from the lyrics, due to the scene switching and jarring colors. The song is definitely a solid ladies anthem tune I’d rock to in a party or rock in the headphones at the gym.  Spice is definitely a talented Dancehall DJ and switched up her lyrical delivery on this track and Missy adds a nice touch without trying to over-do the Caribbean accent.  (Video & Song Below).

Songstress Melanie Fiona is back with “Gone and Never Coming Back” of her sophomore album The MF Life. When I first read the title I thought lady’s anthem, but after listening she has an unusual take on a break-up song. Think she setting up the storyline for her album (or at least I hope so), which I like!

I was wondering if Collie Buddz was going to come out with some new music. I really like his self-titled debut album with hits like “Mamacita”, “Come Around” and “Blind to You”. This new single “Playback” is a little different than his previous dancehall driven hits, it has a slightly R&B undertone, but I really like it. The video is great too.
